What is Microcement?
Microcement is a VERY thin layer of concrete which can be applied to many different surfaces. It is typically only a few millimetres thick and has a very smooth finish, giving the appearance of polished concrete to whatever it is applied to.
Can I microcement over my worktop?
Yes you can.
The ideal substrate is laminate, stone, including marble and granite and concrete. Other Suitable substrates are cement board and moisture resistant MDF.
We don't recommend going over normal MDF or plywood.
For more information refer to these instructions - Microcement Instructions.
I have old wooden worktops. Can I apply microcement over those?
We don't generally recommend this, because the oils in the wood may leach out into the microcement and cause issues.
The good news is that assuming the worktops are free of cracks and defects then with a light sand and a tanking liquid applied to the wood, microcement can go straight over the top.
What maintenance is required?
As part of our microcement kits we provide a sealer. Its very important that the worktop is sealed to ensure longevity. We also recommend waxing the worktops once the sealed microcement has been applied.
Once sealed and in service the worktop can be cleaned like any other surface.
Don't cut on it though!
We recommend re-sealing the floor every 3 to 5 years depending on traffic.
Can it be applied over a tiled worktop?
Yes it can. We Kits specifically for this purpose.
