What type of concrete mix should I use for a worktop?
Well you've come to our website so we're obviously going to say our concrete mix right?
But in all seriousness, one type of concrete is not the same as the next. If you are making a skyscraper the type of concrete is different to the grade and recipe used for a shed base.
The same applies to concrete worktops. Our concrete is specifically designed to have very high early strength, be virtually crack-proof, self-levelling and easy to finish.
Do I need to use reinforcement (rebar, mesh, or fibres)?
Our mix is fibre-reinforced straight off the bat. It certainly doesn't require mesh. It may require bit more reinforcement around hob, sink, BBQ etc. openings. And this is whey we also sell fibreglass reinforcement bars.
How thick should my concrete worktop be?
For Cast-In-Place Concrete projects we recommend a thickness of no less than 30mm.
With our precast system (GFRC Worktop Mix) you can go as low as 18mm. Click here for more info on that.
What type of formwork should I use to build my moulds?
We have a PDF guide just for this! Click this link to find out more.
How do I ensure the edges come out smooth and crisp?
Hey, that's a great question! Well there are two key tips here. When you build your mould make sure any joins in the soul materials are neat and sealed (see our video above for information on this). Also once you've demoulded your concrete consider using diamond hand sanding pads to take any sharp edges off the concrete.
Do I need to vibrate the concrete? If not, how do I prevent air bubbles?
Our mix has an ingredient that makes its flow and level. So it doesn't need any vibration. Most air bubbles will pop out of the concrete are it rests in the mould. There may be a few small pinholes once the concrete has cured but we sell a colour-matched Smoothing Paste which can be used to fill these in.
