How to Refresh Concrete Worktops: Easy Tips for a Stunning Makeover

Every now and then, we hear from customers who’ve moved into a new home and inherited concrete worktops that have seen better days. They often ask us how to bring them back to life, and we’re here to help!

Concrete worktops are a relatively new trend in the UK, and while they’re incredibly durable, not all were created equally. Some DIY enthusiasts and early adopters may have used concrete mixes or sealers that don’t stand up to the daily demands of a kitchen. But don’t worry—whether your worktops just need a little TLC or a full makeover, we’ve got solutions for you.

Why Do Concrete Worktops Deteriorate?

Even a basic concrete mix (one part cement, two parts sand, three parts aggregate) will achieve impressive strength and keep curing for decades—up to 50 years! However, if improperly sealed or left exposed, the surface can erode over time, leading to stains and marks. If that sounds familiar, you have two great options for rejuvenation.

Option 1: Sand Back and Reseal

If your worktops are structurally sound but looking a little tired, sanding and resealing is a straightforward fix.

  1. Clean Thoroughly
Start with a good degreaser. A product like this one works wonders (other brands are available too). With gloves and proper protective gear, scrub your worktops to remove hidden grime.

Tip: Don’t skip this step—it’s crucial for a smooth finish!

  2. Sand the Surface
Grab an orbital sander and mesh sanding discs. Begin with 60-80 grit to strip away the old sealer, then work up to 180 grit for a smooth finish. If stubborn stains remain, revisit the degreaser for another round of scrubbing.

  3. Reseal for Protection

Apply a high-quality concrete sealer. Our sealer is tried, tested, and trusted for long-lasting results. If your worktops were made using our concrete mix, a simple maintenance coat should do the trick. Otherwise, we recommend three full coats for maximum durability.

Option 2: Microtopping or Microcement

If your worktops are heavily damaged—think chips, deep stains, or etched surfaces—microcement is your go-to solution. This method resurfaces your worktops with a thin, durable layer of concrete, leaving them as good as new.

  1. Prep the Surface
Clean, sand, and prime your worktops to create the perfect base.

  2. Apply the Microcement
Spread a thin layer of microcement over the surface. Once it cures, sand it smooth, vacuum off the dust, re-prime, and apply a second coat. After the final coat has cured, sand it with 180-grit for a polished finish.

  3. Seal the Surface

Complete the process by applying the sealer to protect your beautiful new worktops.

Why Choose Microcement?

  • It’s robust and long-lasting.
  • Concrete is the perfect base, making it easy to apply.
  • The result? Stunning, brand-new worktops without the hassle of replacement!
