How to Care for Your Outdoor Concrete Now Summer is Over

As the days get shorter and the weather turns, it’s the perfect time to think about how you protect your outdoor concrete surfaces—whether that’s worktops, patios, or decorative features. After all, a little care now will make sure they look their best and last longer through the cold, damp months ahead.

Why Post-Summer Care Matters

Concrete is tough, but it isn’t invincible. Outdoor conditions—rain, frost, falling leaves, even dirt carried on the wind—can all take a toll on unprotected concrete. Left unchecked, this can lead to staining, surface damage, and unnecessary wear. The key is simple: cover and protect before the harsher weather arrives.

Step 1: Give It a Good Clean

Start by removing any debris, dust, or marks that summer left behind. A sweep and a mild wash are usually enough, but if you notice stubborn stains or surface marks, a degreaser might be needed. Make sure the concrete is completely dry before moving to the next step.

Step 2: Apply Protection

If your concrete is sealed, autumn is a good time to reapply a protective layer. A high-quality sealer (and optional wax topcoat for worktops) will help repel water, resist staining, and keep frost damage at bay. For surfaces like outdoor kitchens, sealing is particularly important to prevent leaf tannins, oils, or food spills from soaking in during the wetter months.

Step 3: Cover Up Where You Can

Covering is the easiest line of defence. If you have outdoor worktops or features that don’t need to be exposed, use weatherproof covers. Breathable, fitted covers are ideal as they protect against moisture without trapping it. For larger surfaces like patios, consider temporary sheeting during long spells of rain or frost.

Step 4: Think Ahead to Spring

Taking the time now to cover and protect means less work when the sun comes back. Your surfaces will be ready to use, looking fresh, and you’ll avoid the frustration of deep stains or damage that could have been prevented with a bit of autumn prep.
